Around Bella Piave

Itinerary "La guerra di Hemingway"

"La guerra di Hemingway" is a cultural and historical itinerary adapted for everyone, a unique experience to get immersed in the events of the Great War, seen through the eyes of the great American writer Ernest Hemingway. A writer that was injured in Fossalta di Piave, and came back years after the end of the conflict attracted by the charm of this Venetian land.
Ernest Hemingway became attached to these places; in fact, he loved being a “boy from the Piave plain (basso Piave)”. Observing closely the horrors of a war that seemed to never end, inspired this American writer to work on “A Farewell to Arms” and “Across the River and Into the Trees”.

The itinerary is divided into stages. Each of them offers a historic and photographic description with a downloadable audio or a file available on a QR Code.
The route is simple and feasible on foot, by bicycle, on motorbike, and it passes unusual roads but always open to traffic.

Altino

Jesolo

The city of Jesolo, suspended between the sea and the lagoon, is just waiting to be discovered.

This small town offers not only the pleasure of the beach, shopping and entertainment, but also it offers beautiful naturalistic routes where you can get immersed into an uncontaminated nature, and you can admire the flora and fauna of this land.

Lido of Jesolo, is known for its sandy beaches and its liveliness. The laguna Nord of Venice, has fishing valleys, protected reserves, and cultivated gardens that offer unknown and evocative landscapes where you will feel silence and tranquility.

Cortellazzo overlooks the River Piave, while Jesolo Historical Center overlooks the Sile River. Both rivers offer lovely views and landscapes, which are worth to admire while you go on foot or by bike.

Caorle

Caorle

This locality offers 18 km of golden sandy beach between the Centre and surrounding areas.

The old town is described as the Venice in miniature due to its narrow streets and colorful houses. The cathedral, the cylindrical bell tower, and the Sanctuary of the Madonna dell’ Angelo are the main monuments that characterize Caorle.  A city that for years has followed the fate of the Serenissima, but never loses its special traditions related to fishing.

In fact, local people have always lived on fishing, first in the lagoon and then in the sea. In this locality, we still can see fishing boats in the port. In addition, this lagoon is a protected naturalistic area, loved by the American writer Ernest Hemingway, where it is still possible to admire lodges made of wood.

We recommend you to visit during the afternoon the medieval village of Asolo, “The City of a Hundred Horizons” loved by artists and travelers of all over the world, and Bassano del Grappa, famous for the Alpine Bridge and many distilleries. Or you can go to Valdobbiadene, known by the excellent Prosecco cellars.

Altino

Altino: the origins of Venice

The ancient city of Altinum was located in the actual town Altino. It was a big Roman city, prosperous and important with an area of about 1 km! In the city center, there was a forum with a basilica for all public functions, some temples, and many emporiums, a kind of mall at that time.

In Altinum there was also a theater, an odeon for musical performances, a spa and an amphitheater for gladiator games. In the 7th century A.D. the barbarian invasions forced the Altinati to seek refuge in the lagoon islands, especially Torcello that was the ancestor of Venice.

Treviso

Treviso

Treviso is a city to visit in any season, with the slow pace of those who want to savor every corner, discover original views, and breathe the peaceful city life. Piazza dei Signori is the heart of the city and a meeting place for the locals. The Building of the Trecento and the elegant Loggia Dei Cavalieri can be found in this piazza.

The rivers Sile and Cagnan that slip between the streets give a unique charm to the old town surrounded by ancient walls. The houses with their beautifully painted facades reflect on the Buranelli canal and the Island of the Fish, which was created in the river Cagnan to accommodate the fish market and shows that Treviso has a close relationship with its water.

Cycling from the Alps to the Adriatic sea

Cycling connects travelling and sport, countries and people, nature and culture, and culinary delights. Delightfully the route leads through three countries, three climate zones, Alpine-Mediterranean environments and five adventure worlds.

Stage 5 - Cycle track Munich- Venice

Fossalta di Piave is a little town on the river Piave about 60 kilometers north of Venice. The town has become famous because the 18-year-old Ernest Hemingway was seriously injured by a grenade here during the second Piave Battle in World War I. After five days in a field hospital Hemingway was brought to a hospital in Milan were he stayed for three further months. During his stay he unhappily fell in love with his nurse, Agnes von Kurowsky, a female American from Washington D.C. In his probably most famous novel “A Farewell to Arms’ he drew on this love and his experience at the front. In honour of the author, a statue with a personal dedication of Hemingway himself was put at the Piave bank. It says “Io sono un ragazzo del basso Piave” (I am a boy from the Piave plain).
